PA-Bred Claiming Horse of the Year
LONE TRAVELER
Bred by Mrs. Ronald B. Houghton
1998, gelding, Judge Smells—Absurd Bird, by Cormorant
Lone Traveler was claimed out of a $7,500 race at Philadelphia Park on January 30, 2004, by trainer Ramon Preciado for Victory Thoroughbreds. In his next 13 starts, Lone Traveler registered seven wins, a second, and two thirds, including a thrilling score in the $40,000 Shumaker Handicap at Penn National, 6 furlongs in 1:09C\b. Lone Traveler was bred by Betsy Houghton at her family’s Sylmar Farm in Christiana, Lancaster County.

Leading Award Recipient Pennsylvania Breeding Fund

SYLMAR FARM
(Mr. and Mrs. Ronald B. Houghton) Total Awards Earned - $129,192
The Houghtons have participated in the Pennsylvania Breeding Fund program for over a quarter-century at their family-owned and operated Sylmar Farm, a full-service breeding and training center in Christiana, Lancaster County. From their small broodmare band, they bring about a dozen PA-breds to the races each year, with the goal of placing them with owners at Pennsylvania tracks. Their big performer in 2004 was Shumaker Handicap winner Lone Traveler.

Pennsylvania’s Stallion of the Year

PATTON
Lord At War (Arg)—Slew Me Down, by Seattle Slew Progeny Earnings of $2,158,350
Stands at Reigle Heir Farms, Grantville (Thomas N. Reigle)
For the second consecutive year, Patton’s total progeny earnings topped the $2 million mark, with his first crop of Pennsylvania-breds hitting the tracks in 2004. He was represented by three stakes winners, including the graded winner Yessirgeneralsir, and three additional stakes-placed runners. Lifetime, he is the sire of 149 winners, exemplifying quality, speed and stamina.

PA-Bred Champion Juvenile Filly

BULITA
Bred by Helen N. Stearns
2002, Knockadoon—Belle Buoy, by Two Punch
Bulita was sold at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale for $17,000, then crossed to southern California for her juvenile racing season. After three seconds, she scored a five-length maiden win at Santa Anita, getting five and a half furlongs in 1:04 2/5. She followed with an unlucky third-place finish in the open $75,000 Anoakia Stakes, and a pair of impressive runs in allowance company. She is by Knockadoon, who stands for the Stearns family at their Justaplain Farm in Cochranville.

PA-Bred Champion Juvenile Male

PERFECTPERFORMANCE
Bred by Brushwood Stable (Elizabeth Moran)
2002, Rahy—Balistroika, by Nijinsky II
One of the most promising juveniles in England last year, Perfectperformance capped his season with a decisive score in the $180,410 Royal Lodge Stakes-G2. In that race, he trounced eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes-G1 winner Wilko by nearly four lengths. This $1.1 million Keeneland yearling also won the Stonehenge Stakes, and finished the year with three wins in five starts, earning $156,506.

PA-Bred Champion Three-Year-Old Filly

LOVELY AFTERNOON
Bred by Two Sisters’ Farm Inc. (Deborah Rush)
2001, Afternoon Deelites—Lovely Later, by Green Dancer
In a limited campaign, Lovely Afternoon started only a half-dozen times, with two wins and a second. Her moment of glory came in Chicago with a victory in the $150,000 Arlington Breeders’ Cup Oaks-G3. Before that start, she was beaten a length and a half in the Double Delta Handicap on the Arlington grass. Lovely Afternoon continues her championship form, as she was the PA-bred 2-year-old filly champion for 2003.

PA-Bred Champion Three-Year-Old Male

SMARTY JONES
Bred by Someday Farm (Roy and Patricia Chapman)
2001, by Elusive Quality—I’ll Get Along, by Smile
America’s horse took racing by storm through the Triple Crown, generating enthusiasm at a whole new level—the top sports story of the year! Popular victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes lost none of their luster with his narrow and controversial defeat in the Belmont Stakes. Smarty Jones and those around him did Pennsylvania and themselves proud, with as classy a campaign as has yet to be witnessed.

PA-Bred Champion Older Female

RUSSIAN RHYTHM
Bred by Brushwood Stable (Elizabeth Moran)
2000, mare, Kingmambo—Balistroika, by Nijinsky II
Another repeat champion, Russian Rhythm had a 4-year-old season consisting of just one race, and what a race it was! Going a mile against the boys in the $371,020 Lockinge Stakes-G1, a race no filly had won in 20 years, she dominated her field for the fourth Group 1 win of her career. Unfortunately, an injury sustained coming out of the race prompted her retirement, but she is rightfully regarded as one of England’s top fillies in recent years.

PA-Bred Champion Older Male

PRESIDENTIALAFFAIR
Bred by Will Run Farm (Lori and Jeff Swatsworth)
1999, gelding, Not For Love—Quite Amazing, by Bear Hunt
Like a fine wine, Presidentialaffair continues to improve with age. First or second in seven of eight starts in 2004, Presidentialaffair set a new track record at Monmouth in the Skip Away Stakes, romped in the Salvator Mile-G3 there, finished second to Horse of the Year Ghostzapper in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin Breeders’ Cup Handicap, then posted a dominating win in the $200,000 Maryland Million Classic. For his efforts, he earned $285,040, and his lifetime bankroll stands just short of half a million dollars.

Broodmare of the Year

BALISTROIKA
Owned by Brushwood Stable (Elizabeth Moran)
1988, Nijinsky II—Balidaress (Ire), by Balidar
A second-generation Brushwood mare, Balistroika has had no fewer than 10 PA-bred foals, including a pair of 2004 PA-bred champions, Russian Rhythm (seven wins in 10 starts, $1,272,258) and Perfectperformance (at 2, 2004, three wins in five starts, $156,506), as well as stakes-placed Ive Gotta Bad Liver (three wins, $84,503), and the Japanese star Zeno Keima (three wins, $298,397).

Leading Overall Breeder of Pennsylvania-Breds

SOMEDAY FARM
(Roy and Patricia Chapman)
Total Earnings - $7,563,853
The Chapmans are no longer at their Someday Farm in southern Chester County, but the memories of their time there are forever etched in the history of the countryside—as the birthplace of Smarty Jones. Foaled from I’ll Get Along, whom the Chapmans bought as a yearling and raced with distinction, Smarty had a 3-year-old season of wonder and awe.

PA-Bred Champion Jumper

BUBBLE ECONOMY
Bred by Dr. and Mrs. Timothy Gardner and Mr. and Mrs. Rick Abbott
1999, gelding, Rakeen—Buffels, by Vaal Reef
After a lackluster career on the flat, Bubble Economy has found new life over jumps. In seven starts last year, he won twice, including a record-setting nearly 20-length win in the Mason Houghland Memorial Timber Stakes at Percy Warner. A $50,000 Timonium yearling, he was the National Steeplechase Association’s champion timber horse for 2004.
