December 10, 2011 - POLLARD'S BOY GOES LAST TO FIRST TO WIN PA NURSERY
by Keith Jones, parx racing
Thomas McClay and Mohn's Hill Farm's Pollard's Boy, trailing the field with a half mile to run, unleashed a furious rally to pass all seven rivals and then pulled away through the final furlong to win the seven furlong $75,000 Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes Saturday afternoon at Parx Racing. It was the first stakes victory in the six race career of the gelded son of Pollard's Vision and pushed his earnings to just over $104,000.

Breaking from the outside gate in the eight, Pollard's Boy showed no intention of getting involved early as winning jockey Dana Whitney immediately took him back and allowed him to settle in at the back of the pack, racing about five lengths behind through the opening three-eighths of a mile. The race had an interesting set up. Traffic Light went out to the early lead, cutting out fractions of 22.93 and 45.80. Meanwhile, six horses lined up across the track to make up the second flight and that allowed Pollard's Boy to quite comfortably sit in behind horses and wait to make a run. And make a run he did.

Still trailing heading to the three-eighths pole, Whitney finally called on Pollard's Boy and he quickly responded. In a little more than an eighth of a mile, Pollard's Boy roared past six of his rivals and then came to the top of the stretch with his sights set on Traffic Light. Getting to the leader with a furlong remaining, Pollard's Boy surged by, took command and then drew off to a convincing two and a half-length victory.

Part of an entry sent out by trainer Bernie Houghton, Pollard's Boy went off as third choice at 7-2 and paid $9.00, 3.80 and 3.20. Traffic Light (9-2) made all the running until the last furlong but was ten lengths clear of the third finisher to take second money and returned 6.40 and 3.40. Ill Conceived (2-1 favorite) was stuck on the outside of that second group of horses, was never really a factor, out finished the others for third and paid 2.60 to show. The final time over a track labeled fast was 1:24.45.

October 19, 2011 - PHILLY BOUND AND LENAPE RIM SCORE AT PENN
Penn National Racecourse hosted a pair of $75,000 sprint stakes on October 14. The Nepal Stakes, for three-year-olds and up, was won by Philly Bound. Bred by Gilbert Campbell, the 5-year-old son of Werblin was never far off the early pace. He was forced to go four wide around the far turn, but then opened up to a clear lead in the final furlong to defeat Whistle Pig by 2 1/4 lengths.
The Ligature Stakes, for fillies and mares, was won via disqualification by Lenape Rim. Bred by Margaret Hoover Brigham, the 3-year-old daughter of Rimrod was unhurried early and angled out on the turn to finish second best. Voodoo's Argument finished first, but after a claim of foul and stewards' inquiry, Voodoo's Argument was found to have lugged in sharply and impeded third place finisher Tap Softly. She was then place third, placing Lenape Rim in the winners circle.

October 10, 2011 - I'M SURE RALLIES FOR UPSET IN ALPHABET SOUP
Parx Racing By Keith Jones
Luis Calderon's I'm Sure rallied from well back, forged past front runner Wannabe with a sixteenth of a mile to go and went on to win the $75,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap by a half-length Saturday afternoon at Parx Racing. It was the first stakes victory in the career of the 6 year-old gelded son of Broken Vow and pushed his lifetime earnings to just over $316,000.

Breaking from the outside gate in the field of seven, I'm Sure was taken immediately to the back of the pack. It's also interesting to note that winning jockey Sammy Bermudez had every chance to drop his horse down to the rail, but elected to keep his horse out in about the three path on a turf course that was labeled yielding. It was also evident very early that the pace would be slow as not a single rider seized the initiative to get to the front. Wannabe landed on top, with the favored Gunfighter content to sit an outside stalking trip and Roadhog laying third. While Wannabe cut out fractions of 24.39 and 49.10, the majority of the field stayed on hold, with positions mostly unchanged to the far turn.

Heading to the backstretch, I'm Sure was still next to last and raced about six lengths off the lead. He made up little ground down the backstretch run, finding himself still five back with three furlongs to run. However, when Bermudez gave his mount the cue to go, the response was immediate. While the three leaders were getting set to battle coming to the quarter pole, I'm Sure was making a strong four wide run. Wannabe stayed on well, but Gunfighter and Roadhog did not, both dropping out of contention turning for home. It was now down to Wannabe and I'm Sure and inside the eighth pole, I'm Sure was the stronger horse. He wore down his rival with about a sixteenth to go, edged to a short lead and slowly inched away to the finish, winning by a solid half-length at the wire.

Off as the second longest price on the board at 9-1, I'm Sure, owned and trained by Luis Calderon, paid $20.60, 11.00, and 5.60. Wannabe (7-1) was the reluctant leader, ran well to finish a good second and returned 8.20 and 4.80. Cat Park (4-1) trailed the field in the early going, made a belated run on the outside and got up for third to pay 3.00 to show. The final time for the one mile and one-sixteenth over the yielding course was 1:46.02.

October 6, 2011 - STATE-BREDS BATTLE ON TURF SATURDAY AT PARX - ALPHABET SOUP H.
Parx Racing By Keith Jones
A full field of twelve is set to face the starter in the Saturday feature at Parx Racing, the $75,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap, a one mile and one-sixteenth turf test for Pennsylvania-bred three year-olds and up. The race honors one of the great PA-breds in history, Alphabet Soup, winner of the 1996 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Toting high weight Saturday will be M & M Thoroughbred Partners' Gunfighter. The four year-old gelded son of Iron Deputy has been both consistent and good through his 8 starts this year, winning twice while finishing off the board only once. His two wins have both been stakes, winning the $67,000 Bernie Dowd Handicap in mid-June at Monmouth Park and the $75,000 Roanoke Stakes over the main track here at Parx. The turf will be something new, almost. He's made one career start on the grass, none so far in 2011. In addition to the two stakes wins, he also been runner up in two stakes as well, the John Reilly and Colts Neck Handicaps, both again at Monmouth. Trainer Steve Klesaris has named Angel Arroyo to ride.

The morning line second choice is Wannabe. Owned by Gavin-Ty Racing & Exacta B.S., the eight year-old gelded son of Petionville shows 6 grass wins during his 59 race career, but he will be stepping up in class come Saturday. He did run a respectable fifth in the September running of the $100,000 Mr. Jenney Handicap, a five furlong sprint over the local course here at Parx. A $16,000 June claim by trainer Richard Vega, he won his second start for the new barn, coming home a winner in a conditional $16,000 claiming race here over seven and a half furlongs, but that win has been his only victory the last two seasons. Roberto Alvarado has the mount.

Last year's Alphabet Soup winner, Roadhog, returns to defend. That victory capped off a terrific season for the now four year-old gelded son of Bowman's Band that saw him named the top three year-old in the state last year. He hasn't been able to recapture that same form so far in 2011. Of the four starts he's made this year, by far the best was two starts back, a second in the $75,000 Robellino Stakes over the turf at Penn National in early August. His prep for this was not his best, a disappointing seventh over a yielding course at Laurel while bet down to 5-2 in the $100,000 Maryland Million Turf last Saturday. He comes back on short rest for Ellendale Racing and trainer Elizabeth Merryman. Frankie Pennington, who was on board for last year's win, will be in the saddle.

October 4, 2011 - FUGITIVE ANGEL WINS H.B.P.A. STAKES AT PRESQUE ISLE
Multiple stakes winner Fugitive Angel won the $100,000 H.B.P.A. Stakes at Presque Isle Downs on October 1st against open company. Bred by Augustin Stable, the 4-year-old daughter of Alphabet Soup pressed the early pace three wide in the 1 mile and 70 yard event over the Tapeta track. She then made a bid for the lead at the quarter pole and opened up to a 1 length victory over Grecian Maiden. With this win Fugitive Angel has earned more than $350,000.

October 3, 2011 - SLOANE RANGER TAKES MARYLAND MILLION STAKE
Vicky Showe's Sloan Ranger won the $100,000 Maryland Million Sprint Handicap on Maryland Million Day at Laurel Park. Bred by Vicky Showe and trained by Marty Ciresa, the 5-year-old son of Parker's Storm Cat track the early pacesetters before moving four wide entering the stretch. He then took command near mid stretch and held off a closing Regal Solo by a half length.

October 3, 2011 - PLUM PRETTY DOMINATES IN G2 COTILLION AT PARX - COCO'S SWEETIE TAKES DISTAFF - Hemmings Wins Jockey Challenge
Parx Racing By Keith Jones
Peachtree Stables' Plum Pretty was at the head of the three year-old filly division following her win this spring in the G1 Kentucky Oaks, but since that time has found the winner's circle hard to come by. A second in the Hollywood Oaks, a second in the G1 CCA Oaks and a disappointing fourth in the marathon Alabama and suddenly the division was wide open. Well, after a thorough trouncing of five rivals including two other Grade 1 winners Saturday afternoon at Parx Racing in the G2 $750,000 Cotillion Stakes, she may be right back on top. Leading gate to wire under Rafael Bejarano, the magnificent looking Medaglia D'Oro filly was sensational in winning her second graded race of the year, hitting the wire seven and a half lengths in front.

When the gate opened for the Cotillion, it was immediately evident that Bejarano had one plan. Go to the front and stay there. Plum Pretty got a quick and athletic start and with an opening quarter in 23.11, Joe Bravo, aboard Todd Pletcher's up and coming and front running filly Love and Pride had little choice but to play the role of stalker. Multiple Grade 1 winner It's Tricky and West Coast invader Halo Dolly raced together third and fourth and they went to the half mile pole. Plum Pretty turned the first half mile in 46.74 and when she hit the mid-point of the far turn, it was apparent that she had just been toying with her field. Bejarano let out a notch and she responded in kind. In a blink, she was clear of Love and Pride and the lead was growing with every stride. Hitting the top of the stretch with a five length lead, she turned a tight race into a blowout in a little more than an eighth of a mile. Bejarano geared her down for the final sixteenth as the local fans roared their approval, watching one of the nation's best young fillies put on a dazzling display.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Plum Pretty was sent off as second choice in the wagering at 3-2 and paid $5.00, 2.60, and 2.40. It's Tricky, the 6-5 race favorite, sat mid-pack but could not make any sustained run at the winner but nonetheless finished out a clear second and paid 2.60 and 2.10. Daring Reality, by far the longest price at 72-1, trailed the field most of the way, but found the energy in the stretch to pass some tired horses and paid 5.00 to show. The final time of 1:41.19 set a new stakes record for the Cotillion.

In the $100,000 PA Breeders Distaff, Carl Bernstein & Dave Cohen's Coco's Sweetie turned back a stiff late challenge from Diva's Gold to win her first stake by a hard fought head. The three year-old daughter of Tenpins used her speed and the inside post to dictate the pace and then fought back gamely through the stretch after briefly giving up the lead with a little more than a furlong to go. With jockey Joe Hampshire aboard, Coco's Sweetie quickly made the lead to the first turn and was unopposed for the run up the backstretch. Sailing through fractions of 24.1 and 48.3, she took a clear lead to the far turn before Diva's Gold began to make her move. Sitting third in the early stages, Diva's Gold had made good progress on the inside and with Coco's Sweetie racing a bit off the rail, challenged from the inside as they hit the quarter pole. Coco's Sweetie dug in, however, and while the two raced down the stretch together, it was she who had gained a slight advantage again with a sixteenth to go and she would carry that slight advantage to the finish, winning by a head. The pre-race warm up played into the race's outcome. The 4-5 favorite and once beaten Ann's Smart Dancer unseated her rider Frankie Pennington in the post parade and was loose on the track for a brief time before being corralled by the outriders. When the gate did break, she appeared to have little jump to her step, raced toward the back of the pack and was not a factor. Trained by Ed Coletti, Coco's Sweetie went off at 4-1 and paid $10.60 to win.

The third stake on the Ladies Day program was the $150,000 Brandywine Stakes, a seven furlong test for two year-old fillies. The 1-5 favorite Say a Novena powered past front runner Flor De Amelia with a furlong to go and then pulled away for a thoroughly convincing six and a half-length victory. It was the second stakes win of the year for the Songandaprayer filly and pushed her freshman earnings to just over $211,000. Trained by Ed Plesa and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, she paid a short price of $2.60 to win.

Cotillion Day is also Ladies Day at Parx and included in the day's events was the Ladies Jockey Challenge. Nine female riders competed for points in three races on the program, the winner taking home bragging rights along with $3,000 in cash. Local jockey Tara Hemmings won two of the three challenge races and took first place over Maria Remedio and Jackie Acksel.

September 30, 2011 - ANN'S SMART DANCER LOOKS FOR FOUR IN A ROW
Silver Lake Stable's Ann's Smart Dancer will be shooting for her fourth consecutive stakes victory on Saturday, October 1st at Parx. Eight fillies and mares are entered in the $100,000 PA Horse Breeders Distaff going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Bred by Russell B. Harris, Craig R. Harris Donnelly, and Jeffrey A. Harris, Ann's Smart Dancer is making her first start at this distance and will be up against some of the best Pennsylvania Bred fillies and mares running in the state; including Sylmar Farm's Outlaw Dancer and Carol Lynn Le Vine's Seychelles.

September 19, 2011 - JUMP START, SMARTY JONES AND E DUBAI TO NORTHVIEW STALLION STATION PA
Northview Stallion Station announced that they have acquired controlling interest in the Northern Hemisphere season of Jump Start (A.P. Indy x Steady Cat). Additionally, both Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality x I'll Get Along) and E Dubai (Mr. Prospector x Words At War) will join the stallion roster at the Pennsylvania division. The stallions, currently ranked as the top three in the state by 2011 progeny earnings, will stand at Northview PA beginning with the 2012 breeding season.

Previously having stood in Pennsylvania at Tarry Bratton's Ghost Ridge Farms, all three are currently breeding in the Southern Hemisphere. "I have decided to concentrate on expanding my broodmare band. The stallions will continue to shuttle dual hemisphere. Northview, which has been a powerhouse in the Mid-Atlantic region, will do a wonderful job with these stallions," said Ghost Ridge Farms owner Tarry Bratton.

"We are delighted to have Jump Start, E Dubai and Smarty Jones," commented Director of Bloodstock services Carl McEntee. "I obviously have a connection with these very special horses from my time at Ghost Ridge. With the addition of these stallions, Northview solidifies themselves as the leading stallion farm in Maryland and Pennsylvania; and for that matter the Northeast." Jump Start, in the midst of one of his best years at stud, is the sire of current top 3-year-old Prayer for Relief, unbeaten in four starts this year, including the West Virginia Derby-G2, Iowa Derby-G3, and most recently the Super Derby-G2 at Louisiana Downs, while earning just shy of $1 million. E Dubai, who sired Godolphin Mile-G2 winner Skysurfers earlier this year, has again had a banner year with his progeny both here and abroad. read more...

September 14, 2011 - THRILLING FINISHES RULE AT PA DAY AT THE RACES
Photo Finish Camera Has Busy Day by Keith Jones, PARX

Saturday Parx Racing played host to the 11th edition of Pennsylvania Day at the Races, a day designed to honor the ever-growing Breeding industry here in the Commonwealth. The card called for four stakes races with purses totaling $350,000 with three of those stakes carded for the grass. Heavy rains here this week forced all three turf stakes to be moved to the main track, but that would not dampen what turned out to be a terrific day of racing at the Bensalem race track. Three of the four stakes went down to the wire, while the fourth saw a giant performance by a horse at long odds.

The $100,000 Mrs. Penny Stakes was won in an upset by Carol Le Vine's Seychelles. The 5 year-old daughter of Bowman's Band put in a powerhouse performance, coming from well off the pace to post a thoroughly convincing length and half victory at odds of 14-1. It was just the third win of her 27 race career for a mare that suddenly has found a new home running long on the main track. For the better part of her career, she had been sprinting and recently those sprints had been on the turf. When a recent August turf race going long that she had entered got moved to the main track, she quickly showed her liking to the new conditions when she rallied from far back to break her first allowance condition. Today was almost a duplicate of that effort. At the gate break, winning jockey Victor Molina was quite content to let her amble out of there and trail the field into the first turn. Once they hit the backstretch of the mile and one-sixteenth test she made her first move. About eight lengths back, she made a strong middle move to get her into contention with a half-mile to go. The question now was whether she could sustain the long run from well back. After that middle move, she settled nicely into third and chased the leaders rounding the far turn before she kicked into gear with a second strong run. Coming to the quarter pole, she eased outside of the two front runners and roared past as they now turned for home. Opening up a three length lead with only one furlong to go, she stayed on well to the finish, holding late running Single Scoop safe through the final sixteenth to win by a length and a half. Trained by her owner, Seychelles paid a win mutuel of $30.60 and stopped the timer in 1:46.55.

The $100,000 Mr. Jenney Handicap, a five furlong sprint with a field of nine, became almost a match race between the favored Just Don and a five year-old mare named Noble Maz. The two broke one-two and essentially battled it out the entire way. Noble Maz was the quicker of the two, sprinting to a clear early lead, but Just Don quickly came up on her inside heading to the far turn. With Noble Maz again edging out to a clear lead midway on the turn, Just Don came to the outside to challenge for the stretch run. With about an eighth of a mile to go, Just Don poked a head in front, but it was obvious that Noble Maz was not through yet. She battled back on the inside and as the two came to the wire, it was Noble Maz who had her head in front. Owned by Fred Hart and trained by Bill McCarthy, Noble Maz, a Storm Boot mare ridden by Kendrick Carmouche, went off at a price of 9-2 and paid $11.00 to win. The final time was :57.66.

The $75,000 Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial Handicap at six furlongs went to Silver Lake Stable's Ann's Smart Dancer. The Dance With Ravens filly has been nearly perfect in her three year-old season, losing only once in six starts, beaten only by the track record performance of Quantum Miss out at Penn National in late May. Sent off as the overwhelming favorite at 1-5, Ann's Smart Dancer had her hands full today. Breaking from the outside gate in a field of six, she had some significant speed on her inside and she was unable to make the lead as she had in her previous start. Stuck wide up the backstretch and sitting fourth with a half-mile to go, "Ann" pressed on in the middle of the track and came on even terms with the two leaders nearing the top of the lane. Inside the eighth pole, she had fought to a short lead, but her rivals Voodoo's Argument and Prize Winner were both running big races on the inside. Calling on all her determination, Ann's Smart Dancer out fought those two to the line and won by a neck. Trained by Butch Reid and ridden by Frankie Pennington, "Ann" won her third consecutive stakes and paid a win mutuel of $2.60. The final time was 1:10.57.

Winter Park Partners' Lucky Lewis survived a stirring stretch duel with Winchell to win the $75,000 Crowd Pleaser by a hard fought head. Sitting last in the field of five with a half mile to go, winning jockey Joe Hampshire guided Lucky Lewis to the outside for clear running at the back of the pack and began to advance steadily in the run to the far turn. Approaching the top of the stretch, Lucky Lewis engaged the heavy 1-5 favorite Gondwanan from the outside while Winchill came through to challenge from the inside. With a furlong to go, Gondwanan surprisingly gave way and that left the battle between Lucky Lewis and Winchell. Lucky Lewis gained a slight advantage with about a sixteenth to go and went on to win the photo by a head. Trained by Stephen DiMauro, Lucky Lewis went off as second choice at 3-1 and paid $8.20 to win. The final time for the one-mile and one-sixteenth was 1:45.69.

September 13, 2011 - SILVER TRAIN TO NORTHVIEW STALLION STATION PA
Northview Stallion Station link.

SILVER TRAIN, (2002, Old Trieste-Ridden in The Stars) will relocate to Northview Stallion Station's, Pennsylvanian division. SILVER TRAIN, who leads the second crop sire list by winners, will stand for an advertised fee of $7,500.

The nation has watched as the stallion market has grown dramatically in Pennsylvania over the past few years following the introduction of expanded gaming in the state. Stallion owners receive 10% awards for all progeny earnings in Pennsylvania, Breeders up to 30% and with owners bonus money ranging from 25%-40% the financial upswing is remarkable.

"SILVER TRAIN showed incredible versatility during his racing career, he won the Breeders Cup Sprint (G1), the Jerome (G2) and the Metropolitan Mile (G1) among others, that same versatility has transcended into his stallion career. " said Director of Bloodstock services Carl McEntee. "We are delighted to offer this horse to the breeders of the Mid Atlantic. This impressive young sire keeps producing winners, with the state bred incentive program we have it will be a resounding success."

McEntee acting as agent for HnR Horseracing LLC, brokered the deal with Vinery who have retained an interest in the horse.

Hank Nothhaft CEO of HnR said, "Obviously I am delighted to have purchased this horse, though I live on the west coast I am originally from PA. This horse was sensational on the track; he had superior speed, but was able to sustain that over two turns at the highest level. September 5, 2011 - EMERALD BEECH RECORDS FIRST GRADED STAKES WIN IN GLENS FALLS

by Patrick Reed Thoroughbred Times

George Strawbridge's homebred Emerald Beech engaged pacesetter Dynaslew in midstretch and pulled away in the final strides for her fourth consecutive victory and first graded stakes win in Monday's $102,000 Glens Falls Stakes (G3) on closing day of Saratoga Race Course's 2011 meeting.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Emerald Beech was reserved well back through the first two turns of the three-turn, 1 3/8-mile race as Grade 2 winner Dynaslew led the field of nine fillies and mares through a soft opening mile in 1:43.18.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux urged Dynaslew through the final turn and the front-runner entered the stretch with a clear advantage, but Emerald Beech rapidly accelerated from sixth and pulled even with Dynaslew before dispatching that foe and rolling to a 1 1/2-length victory.

The top two finishers were well clear of the rest of the field, with Senada taking third late, 7 1/2 lengths behind Dynaslew. Emerald Beech covered 1 3/8 miles in 2:21.71 on soft turf at odds of 3.20-to-1.

"I saved some ground in the first part [of the race]," Solis said. "When I had a chance in the last three-eighths to get her out, I found the firmer ground and she did her kick. Emerald Beech handled the softer turf very well here."

A five-year-old Jonathan Sheppard trainee by Maria's Mon out of the stakes-winning Ocean Crest mare Beyond the Waves, Emerald Beech gradually has improved as a racemare over the past year and closed the summer a perfect two-for-two at Saratoga. She entered the Glens Falls off of a neck win over Senada in the Signature Stallion Waya Stakes on August 10 at the Spa.

"The one thing Emerald Beech does is stay forever," Sheppard said. "She used to run off and now she's learned to relax. We'll see how far we can go with her- she's just matured.

"This is only my second year having her - it takes me a while to figure them out. My training style is to have horses do well as they get older. A lot of other horses get burned out."

Emerald Beech improved to five wins from 15 starts and $238,838 in earnings.

Pennsylvania Day at the Races scheduled for September 10

The 2011 edition of Pennsylvania Day at the Races on September 10 at Parx Racing will feature five stakes for Pennsylvania-Breds as well as six additional state-bred races with a unique link to the Pennsylvania agriculture industry.

The five state-bred stakes feature purses totaling $450,000 with a 25% bonus available in each race for Pennsylvania-sired horses. The 11-race card will offer more than $690,000 in combined purses. This year, in an effort to solidify the link between the Pennsylvania breeding program and the state's agriculture industry, the Pennsylvania Day at the Races undercard races will sport agriculture themes. Races have been named the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Classic, the TrackPackPA Race, The PA Preferred Classic, The Pennsylvania Farm Show Race, the Keystone International Livestock Expo Race, and the Pennsylvania Farmers Showcase Classic.

"Racing is a direct contributor to the Pennsylvania agricultural industry," said Jeb Hannum, executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association. "The breeding industry requires a lengthy commitment from the time of breeding to the sales or to race and thus further benefits local economies through investment and the preservation of open space. We wanted to draw attention to the link between breeding and agriculture and have named all the races on the undercard with agriculture themes. This link is well understood by those in racing but we really wanted to make a point as we have many government officials attend Pennsylvania Day at the Races and it is vital to make this connection. Act 71, the slots bill, has been a great success - it has been a boost to racing and rural economies and there is much more good to come."

The Pennsylvania-Bred stakes featured on the Pennsylvania Day at the Races card are:

the $100,000 Mrs. Penny Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares;

the Pennsylvania Breeders Sprint at seven furlongs for three-year-olds and older;

the Dr. Theresa Garofalo Memorial Stakes at six furlongs for three-year-olds;

the Mr. Jenney Handicap, a five-furlong turf sprint for three-year-olds and older, and

the Crowd Pleaser Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for three-year-olds.

Reports of Mares Bred Due at The Jockey Club by August 1
The Jockey Club reminds stallion owners to submit their Reports of Mares Bred (RMBs) for the 2011 breeding season by August 1.

"Timely submission of RMBs is the first step toward an efficient registration process for foals of 2012," said Matt Iuliano, The Jockey Club's executive vice president and executive director. "It also ensures that the breeding statistics by stallion that The Jockey Club publishes each fall for the industry's benefit are as complete as possible."

Stallion owners who submit their RMBs by August 1 are among the first to receive their Stallion Service Certificates.

Interactive Registration is available at no charge for its registered users at registry.jockeyclub.com. Submission of RMBs via Interactive Registration greatly reduces the delays associated with traditional mail and manual processing and can result in significantly shorter turnaround times for receipt of Stallion Service Certificates.

June 22, 2011 - Gretchen Jackson: What is holding back the organizations that represent the owners?
As usual, the results of the Belmont Seminar on medication and drugs, though educational, were to meet and talk again.

Horse owners were not a part of the panel of speakers. Curious that we, as owners, continue to allow decisions to be made for us, and allow outdated rules to be accepted that are detrimental to racing as well as the horse.

Arthur Hancock has created an opportunity for owners to change the face of racing in America (TDN Op/Ed, 5/18/11), to become more aligned with the rest of the world, to give the horse a chance to heal naturally with no unwanted side effects and to regain a healthy breedable animal. What is holding back the organizations that represent the owners?

There are horse lovers with government jobs that see the need for change in the horse racing and breeding industry. They are eager to help put racing back to a sport of integrity as well as respect for the horse. They are not meeting to talk some more but meeting to vote to help owners, breeders and racing fans as well as our horses regain our authenticity as well as probably our survival as a sport.

June 17, 2011 - PENN NATIONAL SHIFTS RACING TO WEDNESDAY-SUNDAY, REDUCES TAKEOUT
Thoroughbred Times Article posted June 16

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course will amend its racing schedule beginning September 1 to offer racing Wednesday-Sunday rather than Friday-Tuesday.

"There are a limited number of tracks running on Monday and Tuesday nights, and we tried to capture a share of the full-card bettors, but the move didn't generate the interest we had hoped for," said Penn National Vice President of Racing Mark Loewe. "Penn National has a long traditional niche for fans in the latter part of the week, and we are going to return to that position."

Loewe said that the Grantville, Pennsylvania, track would add Tuesday dates beginning in Mid-October to make up for dates lost this winter.

Penn National also announced some good news for bettors, as it received approval beginning July 1 to reduce the takeout on its pick 3, pick 4, and pick 5 wagers to 25% from an onerous 29%. The pick 5 is a new bet that the track will offer on Friday and Saturday nights only. The minimum for each wager is $.50.

- OUTLAW DANCER AND GOLDDIGGER'S BOY TAKE PENN NATIONAL STAKES
Penn National played host to a pair of Pennsylvania-Bred Stakes on the evening of June 14th.

The four-year-old daughter of Bowman's Band, bred and owned by Sylmar Farm stalked the early pace and rallied down the stretch to defeat a stubborn Tap Softly by one length. Outlaw Dancer has now improved her record to five wins from nine starts and has earned over $183,000.

The $75,000 Docent Stakes went to odds on favorite Golddigger's Boy. Owned by William J. Hartwell and bred by Francis M. Hartwell, the four-year old colt by Pennsylvania sire Jump Start vied for the early lead with Sloane Ranger before drawing clear at the top of the stretch and winning by 4 3/4 lengths. He covered the 1 1/16 miles on the main track in 1:44.69. This victory was Golddigger's Boy's fourth win in a row. He was coming off a 1 3/4 length score in an open three other than allowance race at Philadelphia Park. Golddigger's Boy has now won six of ten lifetime starts, and has never finished off the board. He has amassed over $283,000 in earnings.

June 14, 2011 - SADDLE UP: HANNUM TO HEAD BREEDERS GROUP (video)
By GRETCHEN METZ Staff Writer Daily Local News

Article and Video Link

WEST MARLBOROUGH - John B. "Jeb" Hannum III was named executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, a nonprofit organization that oversees the Thoroughbred breeding industry in the commonwealth.

As such, he will manage a staff of four at the association's Kennett Square office, administer the $20 million Pennsylvania Breeding Fund, promote the fund to horsemen in the state and nationally, and communicate with elected officials in Harrisburg. For Hannum and the 725-member association, Thoroughbred breeding is more than a day at the races. It is serious business. "It has a direct link to local agriculture," said Hannum, of West Marlborough, whose family has roots in breeding, training and owning racehorses.

"A strong breeding program attracts breeders to Pennsylvania," he said. "They buy farmland here, move horses here. That helps sustain existing agriculture and open space. The horse farms, like most farms, circulate money through the community by buying local feed, local hay, spending money at local farm equipment dealers and employing residents", Hannum continued.

Brian Sanfratello, association president, said the nonprofit conducted an extensive search for an individual with the talents to lead what the association believes is the top state breeders' incentive program in the country. "The opportunity exists to develop Pennsylvania into a major breeding center over the next few years, and we believe Jeb has the skill set necessary to help accomplish this," Sanfratello said. The association is responsible for all aspects of the Pennsylvania Breeding Fund, including administration, promotion and maintenance of the official registry of PA-Bred racehorses and Pennsylvania stallions.

PA-Bred, which means the mare gave birth in Pennsylvania [and is registered as such with PHBA], makes the horse eligible for lucrative stakes races at Philadelphia Park, Penn National and Presque Isle. That makes Pennsylvania one of the few states that is operating from a position of strength, Hannum said.

For that, Thoroughbred racing has Act 71 to thank, with Hannum calling it "well-written legislation" drafted with input from horsemen across the state. Act 71, known as the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, in 2004 established Pennsylvania's first new state agency in nearly 40 years. The measure that legalized gambling was charged with reinvigorating the state's horse racing industry.

"The introduction of slots created three immediate and important effects: the tracks are investing in improvements, overall the purses in Pennsylvania have increased significantly and the Breeding Fund has increased from about $7 million per year to approximately $20 million per year," Hannum said. Of the three, Hannum said key is the boost in prize money, or purses, from $10,000 to $40,000 per race, thanks to the slot money.

"Pennsylvania can now compete with any state in the country when comparing purses and breeding fund allocations," said Hannum, who estimates Pennsylvania ranks about fifth in the nation, competing with the Triple Crown states of Kentucky, New York and Maryland, plus California.

Hannum is also a real estate agent at Country Properties, a Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors office in East Marlborough that specializes in the listing and selling of historic properties, large tracts of land and horse properties. He has raced as a amateur steeplechase jockey.

Hannum has spent the past three years as a member of the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission. He resigned that position to become executive secretary of PHBA. He holds a master's degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

"I am well aware of the traditions and many successes of Pennsylvania's breeders," Hannum said. "The Pennsylvania Breeding Fund program has been very successful over the years, and it is my ambition to continue to sustain that momentum by representing, advocating, and promoting the association's membership."

June 7, 2011 - Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred EDITOR LUCY ACTON DIES
Lucy Acton, an award-winning journalist and longtime editor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, died at the age of 63 on Tuesday in Baltimore after a long battle with cancer.

The daughter of respected journalist Snowden Carter, Acton was a feature writer for the Baltimore Evening Sun prior to taking a job with Maryland Horse, the predecessor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, in 1985. Acton served as managing editor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred for more than 20 years and served as editor for the last decade.

"Lucy carried the title of managing editor during my time at [the Maryland Horse Breeders Association] and was named editor of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred subsequently, but always played an integral role as a planner, coordinator, and executor of all MHBA publications, especially the magazine, not to mention her ongoing work as its lead writer," Tim Capps, former executive vice president of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and executive vice president of the Maryland Jockey Club, said in a tribute to Acton on The Equiery. "The magazine, whether the Maryland Horse or Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, was the passion of her professional life, and she lived that passion with style, grace, and the joy of someone making a living doing something that was part of her lifestyle."

In addition to her roles at Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, Acton was secretary of the Maryland Racing Media Association and wrote the monthly newsletters for the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. The Maryland Racing Media Association presented Acton with its first Unsung Hero Award in 2005.

Everyone with PHBA is extremely sad to learn of Lucy's passing and keenly remember fondly our many years' association and collaboration for innumerable articles and newsletters she wrote and edited in addition to the events and functions she attended and shared with all of us. Lucy was always elegant, eloquent, kind, gentle, caring, supportive, understanding and especially lenient in light of our often missed deadlines. She consistently added intelligence, insight, accuracy and finely honed English and thoroughbred vernacular to our articles making them have the greatest impact and say everything in the finest manner possible. We will all miss Lucy very much and all our thoughts and prayers go to her family, friends and business associates through all these years of dedication, service and her love of the horse industry and all people she touched in every aspect of her life. Lucy was the penultimate thoroughbred authority and had unmatched class and distinction in her endeavors. We are certain that it will be a difficult task to fill her shoes at MHBA from every aspect.

KENNETT SQUARE, PA ---- John B. "Jeb" Hannum, III has been named executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association today by PHBA president Brian Sanfratello. Hannum succeeds Mark McDermott, who retired earlier this month after thirty-five years in the position.

"The Association conducted an extensive search for an individual with the talents to lead what we think is the top state breeders' incentive program in the country," Sanfratello said. "The opportunity exists to develop Pennsylvania into a major breeding center over the next few years, and we believe Jeb has the skillset necessary to help accomplish this."

Hannum has spent the past three years as a sitting member of the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission. He holds a Masters degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, and has extensive experience in public relations and governmental and legislative affairs nationally, and in Europe.

"I am well aware of the traditions and many successes of Pennsylvania's breeders," Hannum said. "The Pennsylvania Breeding Fund program has been very successful over the years, and it is my ambition to continue to sustain that momentum by representing, advocating, and promoting the Association's membership."

A native of Chester County and now living in Unionville, Hannum is married with three young children. He has family roots in breeding, training, and owning racehorses. He has worked for Hall of Fame trainers in America and the United Kingdom, and has ridden as an amateur steeplechase jockey.

March 30, 2011 - MARK A MCDERMOTT TO RETIRE FROM PHBA
Mark A McDermott

Mark McDermott will retire June 1 after 35 years as executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association.

"Mark has been here almost since the inception of the program and has seen the organization through many dramatic changes," said president Brian Sanfratello.

McDermott's tenure is the longest of any executive in a Thoroughbred breeders' organization in the United States.

Former PHBA president Russell B. Jones, Jr., who was in office at the time of McDermott's hiring, saluted his protege. "I am truly proud that our selection 35 years ago has born such wonderful fruit," Jones said. "Mark has seen us through the institution of full card simulcasting, telephone wagering, internet wagering, the advent of slot machines, and most recently, table games. In each instance his leadership has been invaluable."

Rick Abbott, another former PHBA president, praised McDermott's work ethic and sense of humor. "Representing the PHBA in Harrisburg, at the racetracks, and around the country requires long hours and constant attention to the needs of the membership and to our other constituents: the legislature, the racing commission, the Department of Agriculture, the racetracks, and their horsemen. Mark is everywhere we need him and always has a smile on his face. I, for one, will really miss him."

Sanfratello has appointed a search committee which, with McDermott's guidance, will begin the process of recommending his replacement to the board of directors. The committee consists of Sanfratello, Jones, Abbott, PHBA treasurer and Dale Schilling, and board member Connie Nesteruk.
